A word from the CiA Managing Director

In six weeks, the iCC (international CAN Conference) goes online. It is the first time that CiA organizes an online conference. On four half-days the speakers present their papers. The conference program is online and registration for early birds has started.

There is also a supporting program on three days. On June 15, there are the open-house meetings of several CiA technical groups. Members and non-members are invited to take part in these meeting, in order to get an inside view in the groups’ activities.

    • Interest group J1939
    • SIG contrast media injector
    • SIG (electrical) drives

On June 16 and June 17, there are several webinars scheduled. Details are available on the CiA website.

New CiA 454 specifications

The CiA 454 set of documents specifies the CANopen application profile for energy management systems (EMS). It can be used to control energy sources and energy consumers. This includes light electric vehicles such as pedelecs and e-scooters. It is also suitable for stationary applications.

Part 3 (PDO communication) has been updated. Part 7 (drive control unit) is released for the first time as well as part 9 (human machine interfaces). All three documents are in DSP (draft specification proposal) status meaning they are only accessible for CiA members. Normally after one year, they are reviewed and published as draft specification (DS), which can be purchased also by non-members.

SIG electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

The SIG EMC has started to develop the CiA 120 document, which specifies the EMC evaluation of CAN SIC and CAN XL SIC transceivers. It is intended to submit the related CiA document to IEC for international standardization in the IEC 62228 series. This SIG reports to the IG (interest group) lower layers.

Visiting CiA members and non-members online

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, CiA office visited CiA members and non-members presenting the association and its activities. In order to continue this free-of-charge service, CiA office offers free-of-charge online meetings for interested parties. Of course, member requests have a higher priority. If you are interested to know more about CiA and the planned marketing activities as well as specification developments, please contact CiA office to schedule an online meeting.

CiA 461 series updated

CiA has released version 2.0.0 for CANopen load cells, scales, and HMI (human machine interface) devices. The new version introduces functional safety capability compliant with EN 50325-5 (CANopen Safety). The four documents are published as draft specification proposals. The profile specifications are intended for truck scales and weighbridges as well as other industrial applications. On-board weighing devices with CANopen connectivity are specified in the CiA 459 series.
