SPS 2019: CiA in hall 5 at booth 410

CiA shows on its SPS 2019 stand the migration from classic CANopen to CANopen FD. Additionally, several members exhibit classic CANopen products.

This year, the SPS celebrates its 30th anniversary. CiA has participated 27 times. Since 1994, CiA promotes the CAN-based application layer, which is known as CANopen. This application layer is specified in CiA 301 and uses the Classical CAN data link layer. On its SPS booth, CiA demonstrates the migration from classic CANopen to CANopen FD as specified in CiA 1301. CANopen FD is based on CAN FD providing a payload of up to 64 byte per message. The demonstrated system comprises two networks linked by a bridge/gateway. PDOs (process data objects) can be forwarded directly, while SDO (service data object) transcription to USDO (universal SDO) requires a gateway function.

CAN FD hardware – micro-controllers and transceivers – are available from different manufacturers. The recently released CiA 601-4 (version 2.0.0) specifies the so-called SIC (signal improvement capability) transceivers enables the usage of more challenging network topologies. NXP providing such transceiver has developed a demonstrator with four nodes connected via a star network. The star network is terminated in the center and features two not terminated 5-m branches and two 0,5-m stubs. CiA staff is available on the CiA booth to discuss the migration options from classic CANopen to CANopen FD.

The CiA product panels show classic CANopen devices from different members. This includes sensors, actuators, I/O modules, interface dongles, and host controllers. CANopen is used as embedded network in many industrial machines. One of the main features of classic CANopen and CANopen FD is the scalability.
