CANopen profile for item detection devices

CAN in Automation (CiA) has released the CiA 462 CANopen profile for item detection devices.

his includes 2D and 3D optical cameras. Item detection devices are often used in mobile machines to detect obstacles. They collect environmental data by some physical effects like light, radar, ultrasonic sound or others. This data is “pixel”-oriented or matrix-like organized. The devices process the row data by means of item detection algorithm. The output is a list of items that were detected. The 79-page profile also specifies how the coordinate system can be configured. “This profile is unique and it is the first time that such sophisticated products use a standardized interface,” said Holger Zeltwanger, CiA Managing Director. “Its application is not limited to mobile machines.”

CiA has published more than 15000 pages of CANopen profiles. They describe communication parameters as well as device-specific application parameters. Profile specifications improve the interoperability of CANopen products. CANopen is one of the best-specified communication technologies. Besides in industrial control systems, it is used in machines-on-wheels, medical devices, rail vehicles, lift control systems, and many other embedded control systems.
