A word from the CiA Managing Director

The unusual hot German summer is almost gone and a busy autumn knocks at the door. This means, it will be still “hot”. First event for me is the CAN FD Info Day in Irvine, CA (USA) on Sept. 19. By the way, there are still some seats available. On the same day, starts the IAS tradeshow in Shanghai (China), where CiA is present on the German pavilion in hall 5.1, stand B022. We need to split our forces. In the same week, I will also participate in the ISO TC22 SC31 meeting, which coordinates and manages the two working groups (in-vehicle networks and network applications), which I am chairing. If you have any question regarding CAN and standardization, please do not hesitate to contact me by email.

ISO standardization

  • ISO 11783-3 (Isobus “data link” layer)
This standard is in FDIS (Final Draft International Standard) balloting. It is based on SAE J1939-21 and specifies the application and network layer protocols as well as the mapping to CAN frames in Classical Extended Frame Format.
  • ISO 11992-1 (CAN-based truck/trailer physical layer)
The systematic review of this standard is nearly finished. It has passed the DIS balloting with just a few editorial comments and is expected be published within this year.
  • ISO 16844 series (tachograph)
This standard series is under systematic review. It contains the CAN interface to the driver display, which will be updated to avoid double-specifications with J1939DA. The part specifying the Secured CAN communication will be withdrawn, because it is not used.
  • ISO 16845-2 (ISO 11898-2 conformance test plan)
This recently published standard specifies the conformance test plan for high-speed CAN transceivers.

For further information on standardization please write to standard(at)can-cia.org. CiA staff is participating in many ISO and IEC working groups.

SAE J1939 committee meeting

As usual, the SAE J1939 committee holds its summer meeting. Some progress was made regarding J1939-22 (mapping to CAN FD): The CiA 602-2 specification will be integrated. Beginning of August, the updated SAE J1939DA digital annex has been published. Next committee meeting is in November. For more information, please contact CiA office.

Standardized CANopen interface for batteries and chargers

IEC is standardizing the CANopen interfaces suitable for charging LEVs (light electric vehicles) in public environments. The project is already running since six years. It is intended to publish a Technical Specification (IEC TS 61851-4/5/6/7), but there is political disagreement: Some parties do not like CANopen. The approach submitted by CiA is based on the CiA 454 series. If you like to support this standardization activity, please contact us.

September issue of CAN Newsletter magazine

The third issue in this year contains an article about Ken Tindell’s Classical CAN improvement using the data field as carrier for faster transmitted data. Other articles include the 3rd part of Olaf Pfeiffer’s security series and Michaela Wassenberg’s application note about CAN-connectable IVTs. The single articles or the entire magazine can be downloaded free-of-charge. In order to be updated, you may subscribe to CiA’s Weekly Telegraph.
