CiA® 458: CANopen device profile for energy measurements

Energy saving is on the agenda. Many CANopen devices are designed in such a way that they consume as little energy as possible. However, due to aging effects, devices might consume more energy when they get older than they did in the beginning. In order to detect this, the CiA 458 device profile for energy measurements can be implemented parallel to all other CANopen device profiles.

In particular actuators already measure energy consumption internally. It is easy to provide this information to other devices (e.g. host controllers or human machine interfaces) by means of the object dictionary entries specified in CiA 458. This profile may be implemented as a second logical device using the object dictionary entries from 6800h to 6FFFh.

CANopen also specifies a device degradation functionality in CiA 302-9. This is used for example in lift control systems (CiA 417 series). With CAN hardware you also can save energy by using low-power micro-controllers and low-power high-speed transceivers optionally available with selective wake-up functionalities.
