CAN time-stamping standardized

CAN in Automation (CiA) has released the CiA 603 specification defining the requirements for CAN network time management.

This approach is compliant to the Autosar network time management. It specifies that for the time capturing the CAN message is accepted as valid (with the sixth bit of the End-of-Frame field). The 12-pages specification also defines the resolution options and a free-running counter. It is intended for chipmakers and implementers of the CAN protocol. The described time management can be used in Classical CAN as well as CAN FD networks.

“Standardized time management and time-stamping of CAN messages is an important issue for the next generation of communication in vehicles,” said Holger Zeltwanger, CiA Managing Director. The specified hardware approach requiring two CAN messages is compatible with the current software solutions. But it is more precise.
