CAN FD light ecosystem
This one-hour webinar in English language provides an overview about the CAN FD light approach, standardized in ISO 11898-1:2024. It starts at 13:00 (UTC+2) on June 11, 2026.
The CAN FD light system comprises a commander/responder protocol standardized in ISO 11898-1, the CiA 604-3 design recommendation, and the high-speed mode specified in CiA 604-4. Originally, the CAN FD light protocol was jointly developed by several CiA members and released in the CiA 604 specification series. In the meantime, it has been submitted to ISO. The CAN FD light protocol conformance test plan will be part of the next ISO 16845-1 standard edition, which is currently under development.
CAN FD light is intended for price-sensitive applications. The responder nodes do not need expensive peripheral circuitry. A typical application is the control of vehicle rear lamps, comprising multiple LEDs (light emitting diodes). Another option are HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning) systems.
Another benefit is the robustness of the CAN FD physical layer. CAN transceiver chips provide an excellent EMC (electro-magnetic compatibility) performance. Additionally, they are suitable for 48-V powered systems (tests for short circuits and loss of ground are under development in CiA). CAN FD light networks can be used to substitute low-performance networks with limited robustness. Examples include, door-internal and seat-internal networks. A new application could be also the communication of child restraint systems (CRS) with in-vehicle networks. Usage in non-automotive applications is possible, too.
The webinar is intended for decision makers and electronic engineers, interested to get an overview about the CAN FD light ecosystem and its possible applications. It is free of charge, registration via email is obligatory.
