New editions of ISO 11898-1 and ISO 11898-2

CiA has submitted its CiA 610-1 (CAN XL data link layer and physical coding sub-layer), CiA 610-3 (CAN SIC XL physical media attachment (PMA) sub-layer), and CiA 601-4 (CAN SIC PMA sub-layer) specifications for international standardization.

These CiA documents have been forwarded onto ISO (International Standardization Organization) for integration into the ISO 11898-1 standard respectively the ISO 11898-2 standard. Both updated ISO documents cover now all three generations of CAN lower layers: Classical CAN, CAN FD, and CAN XL. The new edition of ISO 11898-2 (CAN physical media attachment sub-layer) is already in Draft International Standard (DIS) ballot, and ISO 11898-1 (CAN data link layer and physical coding sub-layer) will follow, soon.

National standardization bodies with voting rights are requested to evaluate the two ISO documents and to submit comments. If you are interested to participate in the ballot, you should contact your national standardization body. In case of a positive voting, the editorial and general comments will be resolved and implemented before the documents are published. In case of severe technical comments, ISO performs an optional Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) ballot after DIS comment resolution and document update.

In the new editions, CAN XL and CAN SIC XL functionality will be internationally standardized as well as the CAN SIC functionality increasingly used in CAN FD networks. CAN XL and CAN SIC XL implementations support bit-rates of 10 Mbit/s and more. In April, CiA organizes a CAN XL plugfest in Detroit to prove interoperability of first implementations. Additionally, CiA has scheduled CAN XL technology days in Detroit and Paris to inform interested parties about the third CAN lower-layer generation.
