SIG subsea extends profile-related functionality

In the past, CiA has developed many device, application, and interface profiles for the classic CANopen application layer (CiA 301).

One of them is the CiA 443 CANopen profile for SIIS level-2 devices jointly developed with the SIIS (Subsea Instruments Interface Standardization) group. It specifies CANopen interfaces for instruments and actuators in subsea measurement systems, nicknamed “subsea trees” or “Christmas trees”. The instruments include pressure and temperature sensors as well as complex multi-purpose instruments such as multi-phase flow meter. Subsea actuators include valves and valve controller units. These devices are applied on the ocean ground, e.g., to protect oil-and-gas explorations.

This year, CiA re-established the SIG (special interest group) subsea responsible for the CiA 443. On the first e-meeting in January, Harald Schuhmacher (Onesubsea) was elected as the new chairperson. The group has reviewed all pending comments and has asked CiA office to implement them in the next document version. In the reviewed version, the inappropriate terms are going to be replaced by inclusive terminology. Additionally, the SIG is going to extend the profile functionality. Under consideration are battery management, electrical motors, and power switching devices. Guidelines for a configuration download are under preparation. A proposal for protecting of the high-speed transceivers should be also included into the specification.

The CiA members Onesubsea, Skoflo, Siemens Energy, TechnipFMC, Clampon, Hunting Subsea Technologies, Teledyne, and LMM Designs are already working in the group.
