The monthly-distributed CiA Member News (CMN) email contains additional information about CAN-related themes. This service is limited to CiA members. Login and subscribe here.
CiA webinars
CiA has scheduled its 2021 webinars. For details see the CiA activities list on the left. The first webinar on February 2 provides information about the CANopen Lift profile (CiA 417 series).
CAN Info Mail
As in the last year, CiA sends monthly the CAN Info Mail (CIM) email informing the CAN community about its activities and other interesting news about CAN-related topics. Subscribe here.
Happy New Year
The CiA staff is partly back in office, but most of us are still working remotely from home. Nevertheless, the CiA office is full operational.
Commander and responder
CiA and SAE have agreed to use “commander” and “responder” instead of “master” respectively ”slave” in combination with “network”, “device”, and “node”. Both organizations are committed to use inclusive language in their specifications.
DIN reviews 14700-1
DIN, the German standardization body, reviews the DIN 14700-1 (FireCAN) standard regarding the usage of COB-IDs. The standard is based on CANopen with some changes. It is intended for firefighting-specific add-on devices. More than 10 different devices are standardized.
731 CiA members
The nonprofit association has now 731 members. About 400 provide devices, some 200 supply sub-systems, and about 80 are technology enablers.
DIN working group on J1939
Beginning of next year, the DIN working group (WG) on J1939 will be chaired by Holger Zeltwanger. The WG discusses about J1939-based standards dedicated to road vehicles.
New version of J1939DA
SAE International has released its quarterly update of the J1939 Digital Annex specifying parameter groups (PG) and suspect parameters (SP). Manufacturer IDs and global source addresses (SA) are provided, too.
CAN FD light
The SIG CAN FD light has made progress in specifying a dedicated CAN FD protocol implementation for simple network applications such as in smart lighting sub-systems. Of course, it can also be used for other applications.
The problems are solved, not by giving new information, but by arranging what we have known since long.
CiA community
The CAN community is huge. More than two billion of CAN nodes are installed annually. And this figure is still growing. The number of CAN fellows organized in the nonprofit CiA users’ and manufacturers’ group is much smaller. Due to new CAN data link layer (CAN XL and CAN FD Light) and new CAN physical medium attachment developments (CAN SIC and CAN SIC XL), the membership is growing, too. There are also new members interested in CiA profile developed for new markets such as battery management, fire-fighting equipment, etc.
“We take the already existing ideas in communication technology as well as in human communication, arrange them newly, and new specifications and recommendations are born,” said Holger Zeltwanger, CiA Managing Director.
