A word from the CiA Managing Director

Artificial intelligence (AI) seems to change our work dramatically. It develops fast and addresses more and more applications. AI is increasingly used in CAN-based applications. In many of them, CAN networks feed the AI-capable host controllers with data collected in CAN-connected sensors and actuators. Especially, in sophisticated autonomous systems, AI is applied. The SPS tradeshow 2025 in Nuremberg (Germany) focuses on AI in smart production systems. Similar trends happen in the agriculture and other industries. This will be shown on the Agritechnica tradeshow 2025 in Hanover (Germany) and the Interlift 2025 exhibition in Nuremberg. On all three mentioned fairs, CiA participates with a booth. For details, please visit the CiA website.

Peter Leibinger, president of BDI (the nonprofit umbrella organization of German industry and industry-related service providers), recently introduced a study on technology opportunities for the German industry. He especially mentioned robotics in conjunction with AI-based control. From the BDI viewpoint, applications in healthcare (e.g., service robots) and agriculture (e.g., harvesting robots and feeding robots) have a huge potential.

Even, CiA administration uses AI, respecting the CiA code of ethics and conduct as well as European/German regulations on data processing, especially to protect rights on privacy and on intellectual properties. Additionally, CiA protects the copyright of jointly developed and released CiA technical documents as well as the copyright of CiA publications. Therefore, the CiA Board of Directors has developed a statement on the usage of AI software within the nonprofit association.

AI also changes maintenance and diagnostics of CAN networks. Related tools use AI to support trouble-shooting, for example. The CAN Newsletter editors are looking for articles on AI-based tools and other AI success stories in CAN-based applications.

September issue of CAN Newsletter

The September issue focusses on CAN in agriculture industry including an interview with CiA member Lely using CAN/CANopen in its milking and feeding robots for 20 years. Growy, also a member of CiA, informs about its CANopen deployment in modular and scalable vertical farms. Additionally, the ‘standards and specifications’ column is dedicated to CAN in agri-food systems providing an overview about current standardization activities in this sector.

CiA online seminars

CiA has scheduled two four-hours online seminars for newcomers: One explains CAN protocols and physical layer options in some details and another one introduces CANopen ecosystems. These charged seminars will be held on October 22 respectively October 23. They address device designers and system integrators as well as other persons interested in basic information on CAN respectively CANopen. For details visit the CiA website.

CANopen-connectable equipment for fire-fighting vehicles

The DIN 14700 (German) standard (published in 2024) has been submitted to ISO for international standardization. The ISO/TC 22/SC 31 has accepted the proposed new work item and the national mirror committees can vote on it, soon. Additionally, the national bodies can nominate experts. Interested parties can contact CiA office to get more detailed information. Besides a positive vote from the national mirror committees, experts from five countries are needed. DIN 14700 is also nicknamed “FireCAN”. It is based on the CiA 301 CANopen CC (classic) application layer.

Interlift 2025

CiA exhibits at Interlift 2025 (October 14 to 17) in Nuremberg (hall 3, booth A406). CiA staff informs visitors about the current status and planned new features of the CiA 417 specifications (also known as CANopen Lift). Additionally, the benefits of CANopen Lift plugfests are explained. Unfortunately, there are no product panels shown on the CiA stand, due to low request by CiA members. Nevertheless, an increasing number of CANopen Lift products are exhibited on the fairground.

It is possible to schedule a meeting on the CiA stand in advance.

CiA member days 2026

The location of the next CiA member days is Freising (Germany), close to the Munich airport. The event takes place on March 24 and 25, 2026. On the second day, the CiA general assembly is held. CiA office is preparing the program, including several technical presentations. Speakers will be invited, but also proposals are welcome. There is also an option for CiA groups to request a meeting during the two-days event.

Save the date: 19th iCC in 2027

CiA celebrates its 35th anniversary in March 2027. On March 3 and 4, the 19th international CAN Conference (iCC) will take place at the Lake of Starnberg (close to Munich, Germany). The call for papers is planned to start beginning of 2026. The CiA general assembly is scheduled on March 5, the CiA birthday.
