No. 17 - December 5, 2025
in Hanover, Germany (Source: CiA)
A word from the CiA Managing Director
This year started with the CiA Member Days in Frankfurt (Germany) and ended with the CiA Business Committee meeting beginning of December, finalizing the CiA budget 2026. In November, CiA organized the three-stops (Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen) CAN XL roadshow in China, sponsored by Bosch, CAST, and Hongke. There were about 30 (Beijing), 85 (Shanghai), and 35 (Shenzhen) participants, not counting speakers and exhibitors. The discussions went deep into technical details, especially at the table-top exhibition. Mainly carmakers and their suppliers attended the one-day events. In China, also an increasing number of chipmakers implement CAN XL protocol controllers and CAN transceivers.
Regarding CiA specifications and international CAN-related standards, this year was business as usual. In more than 100 meetings, CiA members made significant progress on new documents and documents in revision. Beginning of next year, several CiA documents on CAN XL (design recommendations and add-on specifications) will be released. Finalizing the 4th edition of ISO 11898-2 was another activity supported by CiA members.
This year, CiA participated for the first time in the IVT trade show in Chicago (U.S.A.) and the Agritechnica fair in Hanover (Germany). Both exhibitions address mobile machinery, which often implements embedded CAN-based networks. Agritechnica 2025 attracted 476000 visitors from 171 countries and 2849 exhibitors from 52 nations. CiA plans to participate in IVT (U.S.A.) 2026; next Agritechnica takes place in 2027. Next year, CiA is going to attend Conexpo (Las Vegas) and Bauma China (Shanghai) trade shows, focusing on mobile construction and earth-moving machinery. Of course, CiA has booked stands at Embedded World and SPS trade shows.
Between the years, the CiA office is closed for some days (December 22 to January 6). CiA office opens again on January 7. What remains: I like to thank the CiA team for their support and services to foster the CiA association.
I wish all CCN readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
CAN Newsletter magazine: December issue released
Testing 48-V CAN transceiver
CiA is going to establish a technical group specifying a test plan for 48-V CAN transceivers. The inaugural meeting will take place mid of January in Hamburg (Germany). A pre-meeting is scheduled mid of December. Interested parties can contact the CiA office.
Beginning of next year, CiA will call for parties interested to specify a partial networking option for the CAN SIC XL transceiver.
Profile for pedelec and e-bike embedded CANopen CC networks
CiA is going to organize a workshop to discuss a CANopen CC profile for embedded networks in LEVs (light electric vehicles). There are several products with CANopen CC interface on the market, using proprietary profiles. In order to make system integration as simple as possible, standardized CiA profiles, motors, sensors, human machine interfaces, etc. would be helpful. Therefore, CiA likes to schedule a free-of-charge workshop (open also for non-members) on this topic directly before or after the Embedded World 2026 trade show in Nuremberg. Interested parties can contact the CiA office.
CiA webinar: CAN XL status and future
In a one-hour webinar on December 11 (start 15:00, UTC+1), CiA briefly introduces attendees into CAN XL and presents an overview of available CAN XL solutions. Additionally, the trainer informs about the current CAN XL availability. Participants will also have a room for discussions.
The webinar is free of charge, presentation language is English. Registration is obligatory and is possible via email.
CANopen Lift plugfest
CiA organized its 24th CANopen Lift plugfest on December 2, 2025 at the CiA office in Nuremberg (Germany). Companies Böhnke + Partner, Georg Kühn Steuerungstechnik, and Thor Engineering (all three from Germany) arrived with their lift host controllers. They tested in one-to-one sessions devices of the lift device manufacturers Algi Alfred Giehl (CH), Cedes (CH), Henning (DE), Schneider Steuerungstechnik (DE), Thor Engineering (DE), and Ziehl-Abegg (DE). The attendees have gained feedback to refine their implementations, to fix issues, to test new functions, and provided valuable input for improvement of the CiA 417 specification (CANopen Lift).
CiA 319 released as draft specification proposal (DSP)
CiA has released the CiA 319 version 2.0.0 as a DSP. This CANopen implementation and configuration specification is dedicated for safety-related devices implementing communication services given in EN 50325-5:2010. It is available for member companies on the CiA website.
DIN 14700 likes to become ISO 26343
The DIN 14700 standard (also known as FireCAN) specifies the CANopen CC application profile for fire-fighting equipment, which also can be mounted on other rescue vehicles. It has been submitted to ISO/TC 22/SC 31 for international standardization and is pre-registered under ISO/NWI 26343. To be accepted, the majority of the 24 national standardization bodies with voting rights needs to vote in favor and nominate experts (in minimum from five countries).
If you would like to support the ISO 26343 development, please contact your national ISO/TC 22/SC 31 mirror committee, vote, and apply for expert nomination. The deadline is in most countries before Christmas. If you need support or more information, you can contact the CiA office.
CiA member days 2026
Next CiA member days will take place in Freising (Germany) on March 24 and 25. They comprise the CiA general assembly, four technical presentation sessions (each with three papers), and a social event in the evening. There is also a possibility for meetings of technical or marketing groups. The preliminary program is available on the CiA website. Registration via email is obligatory.
Conexpo 2026 in Las Vegas: Co-exhibition possible
CiA exhibits on the Conexpo trade show in Las Vegas (U.S.A.) from March 3 to 7. CiA member companies are welcome to become a co-exhibitor on the CiA joint stand in the North hall, booth N10545. Interested parties should contact CiA by December 15, 2025.
SPS trade show in Nuremberg
As usual, CiA participated in the SPS fair with about 56000 visitors and 1175 exhibitors in 15 halls. This year, CiA introduced its support for embedded AI (artificial intelligence). Next year, CiA plans to offer its members a joint booth at the SPS in Nuremberg (Germany). Interested parties should indicate their interest to be a sub-exhibitor on the CiA booth as early as possible, so that CiA can pre-order sufficient space.
