No. 3 - March 6, 2026

A word from the CiA Managing Director

The Embedded World 2026 trade show takes place in Nuremberg (Germany) from March 10 to 12. This exhibition is an early indicator for embedded system designers, which technology trends are coming soon and which are in the pipeline.

As usual, CiA has a booth in hall 1 (stand 203). This year, the nonprofit association is scheduling round-table discussions to talk about CAN-related technology trends. Invited are CiA members and other interested parties. CiA staff moderates the discussions.

Tuesday:

10:00 – CAN XL ecosystem
13:00 – Embedded AI and CAN
16:00 – CAN: functional safety and cybersecurity

Wednesday:

10:00 – CiA marketing: read, write, and advertise
12:00 – CAN: functional safety and cybersecurity
14:00 – Embedded AI and CAN
16:00 – CAN FD and CANopen FD

Thursday:

10:00 – CAN XL ecosystem
13:00 – CiA marketing: read, write, and advertise
16:00 – CAN FD and CANopen FD

One day after the Embedded World, on March 13, CiA members can participate in the CiA workshop “light electric vehicles (LEV)”. The workshop will take place in Nuremberg. Rotax Bike Technology (CH) will present its CANopen-based FIT 2.0 approach and CiA will provide an overview on the released related IEC standards and CiA specifications. Besides standardized device profiles, an important topic is a manufacturer-independent CANopen-based diagnostic interface. Especially, pedelec and e-bike vendors are invited to join the free-of-charge CiA workshop.

CAN Newsletter magazine: March issue published

The March 2026 issue is online and can be downloaded free of charge. It focuses on embedded AI (artificial intelligence). There are news and reports about CAN-connectable devices, featuring AI-processing capabilities. The magazine also reports about the CES trade show in Las Vegas, which took place beginning of January.

CiA Member Days: Registration is still open

The CiA Member Days are scheduled on March 24 and 25 in Freising (close to the Munich airport). The two-days event comprises technical presentations, the CiA General Assembly 2026, and optionally CiA technical group meetings. Registration for the event is obligatory.

Workshop: Cybersecurity in vehicles for drivers with reduced capabilities

The increasing implementation of cybersecurity legislation, in particular UNECE 155, has a significant impact on the integration of equipment for drivers with reduced capabilities into CAN-based in-vehicle networks. To ensure technical feasibility, interoperability, and regulatory compliance, CiA and European Mobility Group initiate a review of the CiA 447 CANopen profile.

Both nonprofit associations like to invite experts from automakers and suppliers to a workshop, discussing requirements and possible solutions. The web-based workshop is scheduled on April 9, 2026 (10:00 to 15:00, UTC+2). If you are interested to contribute and/or participate, you can contact the CiA office.

CiA statement on CRA and CAN

The CiA board of directors has published a statement on the EU CRA (European Cyber Resilience Act) and its impact on CAN network applications. It gives some guidelines to device and network designers, regarding the implementation of cybersecurity measures. Of course, this statement is subject to be changed, when additional EU regulations enter into force.

LIN supplier-ID assignments

Since several years, CiA assigns the LIN supplier-ID as requested in the ISO 17987 standard series on behalf of ISO (International Standardization Organization). In 2025, CiA has registered 22 companies. Recently, Finest Electronic Technology (China), Maier Technology Centre (Spain), and Valeo (France) received an ID. In total, CiA has assigned 216 LIN supplier-IDs.

CiA 320 updated

The updated CiA document (v. 2.0.0) specifies CANopen services and protocols for sleep and wake-up handling. Because of a stricter PM (power management) manager livesign, the specification is not completely backwards compatible with the legacy version. Clarifications and editorial improvements have been introduced, too. A new informative annex provides some power-management use cases. The document includes a detailed reasoning for sleep objections and requests.

In February of 1986, Robert Bosch introduced the Controller Area Network (CAN) serial bus system at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) congress. On the CiA website you find a detailed article about the CAN history.
