CAN Info Mail

This monthly email is for all CAN fellows.
December 2018

A word from the CiA Managing Director

The year was challenging, in particular the adaption to the European General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR). We lost some connections to customers and interested parties, because they did not respond to our emails. Now, we are not allowed to contact them again.

Regarding CAN technology, we received requirements for a next generation CAN data link layer providing payloads to run TCP/IP protocols on a single CAN data frame. A first CiA meeting is scheduled for mid of December. The participants will discuss the requirements and agree on a framework for the development of such a next generation CAN data link layer.

CiA made some progress in CANopen FD specifications, which will continue next year. For promotion purposes, CiA has made a video explaining briefly the benefits of CANopen FD.

The next year will be as busy as this year. I expect the release of several CANopen FD related specifications in the first half of 2019. Additionally, CiA will sponsor CANopen FD seminars. This means, CiA members have a free access. But please, do not register and then do not show up. The seats are limited and this way each seat not used is a waste.

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

CiA in Far East

In November, CiA provided some presentations about CAN FD and CANopen FD in Japan, South Korea, and China. The event in Tokyo was organized jointly with the nonprofit Jaspar association. In Seoul, CiA strengthened its relation to Korean universities, which will be continued next year.

In China, the “CAN FD theory and practice” events in Changsha, Wuhan, Suzhou, and Hangzhou were jointly operated with Hongke, Kvaser, and ZLG. Additionally, CiA participated in a seminar organized by Hirain and Kvaser. In total, 500 engineers were informed about CAN FD.

In 2019, CiA will continue such information days in Asia. CiA invites all of its members to participate actively in such events.

December issue of CAN Newsletter

The last issue of 2018 focuses on engineering. The magazine can be downloaded free-of-charge. The single articles are described briefly in the CAN Newsletter Online and can be downloaded also article-wise.

There are articles about reverse engineering, a J1939 tool chain, an open-source CAN FD core project, and optimization of the CAN bit timing, for example.

New edition of ISO 11783-3 released

In November, ISO released a new edition of the J1939-based application layer for agriculture machines. It is still named “data link layer”, which is misleading, because it specifies the transport and application layer. The document is not in a very good shape. There are several editorial and general weaknesses and even some technical issues.

The entire ISO 11783 series needs to be improved: terminology is sometimes questionable as well as the general structure of some documents. Some of the content could be misinterpreted easily.

New seminar contents

Besides the well-known seminars “CAN for newcomers” and “CANopen for beginners”, CiA offers in the next year also dedicated CAN FD and CANopen FD seminars. The trainers of the CANopen FD seminar explain in very detail the CANopen FD protocol as specified in CiA 1301. On the one hand, the attendees learn the embedded network design options provided by CANopen FD. On the other hand, they learn that most of already available Classic CANopen knowledge is applicable in CANopen FD networking, as well.

The new CAN FD seminar addresses attendees with some basic knowledge in Classical CAN. Parts of the curriculum are design recommendations for devices and networks as well as standardization aspects. The trainers also provide an outlook to future developments in CAN technology.
