A word from the CiA Managing Director

CAN XL is more than just an additional data link layer protocol and a faster transmission technology. It covers also an ecosystem comprising add-on functions such as frame fragmentation and the CANsec data link layer cybersecurity protocol. Additionally, CiA members specify jointly the use of the service data unit type (SDT) sub-field, which indicates the implemented next higher OSI layer protocol. The following CAN XL related CiA documents are under development (in Italic) or are already released:

  • CiA 120: EMC evaluation of CAN SIC and CAN SIC XL transceivers
  • CiA 610-1: CAN XL data link layer (DLL) and physical signaling sub-layer
  • CiA 610-2: Conformance test plan for CiA 610-1
  • CiA 610-3: CAN SIC XL physical media attachment (PMA) CiA
  • CiA 610-4: Conformance test plan for CiA 610-3
  • CiA 611-1: Service data unit type CiA 611-2: Multi-PDU (protocol data unit)
  • CiA 612-1: CAN XL system design guidelines
  • CiA 612-2: PWM-coding implementation guideline
  • CiA 613-1: Simple/extended content (SEC) indication
  • CiA 613-2: CAN XL DLL security add-on function (CANsec)
  • CiA 613-3: CAN XL LLC frame fragmentation add-on function
  • CiA 901-1: CAN XL lower-layers modeling
  • CiA 910-1: CAN simulation model (terms and use cases)
  • CiA 910-2: PMA simulation model
  • CiA 910-3: PMD (physical medium dependent) simulation model
  • CiA 910-4: Conformance test plan for CiA 910-2
  • CiA 910-5: Conformance test plan for CiA 910-3

CiA has submitted CiA 610-1 and CiA 610-3 to be integrated into next editions of the ISO 11898-1 (CAN data link layer and physical signaling sub-layer) standard respectively the ISO 11898-2 (CAN physical medium attachment sub-layer) standard. The new ISO 11898-2 edition is already in DIS (Draft International Standard) ballot.

CiA plans also to establish the CAN XL marketing group (MG) to promote the CAN XL ecosystem. This includes the organization of CAN XL plugfests to test the interoperability of CAN XL implementations and to provide jointly CAN XL demonstrators. Of course, the MG will also schedule educational events and provide technical information. If you would like to participate in the development and marketing of the CAN XL ecosystem, you can contact me.

September issue of CAN Newsletter magazine

The third issue of the free-of-charge CAN Newsletter magazine 2022 has been released. It continues with the “history and trends” series featuring CAN on construction sites and CAN on rails . A report about the 30th CiA anniversary including CiA member interviews give a valuable feedback on CiA’s work. Topics such as photovoltaics for on-board charging, CAN products for mobile machines, CANopen-powered subway auxiliary inverters are also covered. Providers give an interview on CAN SIC transceivers. Additionally, a vehicle network processing platform with functional safety, how to secure CAN networks in commercial vehicles, as well as a CAN FD open-source IP core comprise the magazine. Brief news is provided in the section standards and specifications.

The articles can be downloaded individually or you can download the entire magazine.

The September issue of the CAN Newsletter magazine 2022 will be printed and distributed exclusively at the following trade shows: Innotrans Berlin (hall 27, stand 290), Bauma Munich (hall A2, stand 337), and SPS Nuremberg (hall 5, stand 410). Just visit the CiA stand to get a printed copy.

International CAN Conference 2020 videos

CiA has recorded the presentations (papers as well as the open webinars) given at the 17th international CAN Conference (iCC). They are now available free of charge on CiA’s Youtube channel. There are also videos of previous iCC presentations on Youtube.

On-site seminars in October

In October, CiA plans two in-person seminars in Nuremberg (Germany). The seminar CAN for newcomers is scheduled for October 12, 2022 (9:00 to 17:00, UTC+2). The seminar CANopen for newcomers is planned on October 13, 2022 (9:00 to 17:00, UTC+2).

CiA booth at Innotrans

The Innotrans is an international trade fair for transport technology and takes place every two years in Berlin (Germany). Sub-divided into the five trade fair segments railway technology, railway infrastructure, public transport, interiors, and tunnel construction, the trade show occupies 42 halls. The CiA booth is in hall 27 (stand 290). Appointments with CiA representatives can be made by email.

For industry and home: CAN FD MCUs enable high-speed communication

Renesas launches the 5-V RX660 32-bit MCUs (micro-controller unit) with noise tolerance for home appliances and industrial applications. They are the first RX family MCUs with CAN FD and enable high-speed communication for industrial equipment and robotics.

Free-of-charge Chinese CiA technology day

The technology day on September 19, 2022 is held in Chinese language. Presentations given in English are translated. The three-hour online event focuses on specific application fields and topics relevant for the Chinese CAN community. The speakers report about trends in CAN-based networking, considering CAN FD, CAN XL, etc. Additionally, they consider the impact of these trends on higher-layer protocols, such as CANopen or J1939.
