CiA® 303 series: CANopen recommendation

CiA 303 is a set of specifications, having various topics in the scope such as connector pin assignment, SI unit representation or indicating the CANopen device status by means of LEDs. CiA 303 covers the following parts:

  • Part 1: Cabling and connector pin assignment
  • Part 2: Representation of SI units and prefixes
  • Part 3: Indicator specification

Part 1 recommends cabling and pin assignment of bus connectors for CANopen- based systems. It specifies also the naming conventions for the bus lines, ground lines and shield connections. The pin assignment for various types of connectors is specified. In case the connecter you like to use is not supported, please contact CiA office and request a specification of the connector pin assignment for this new type of connector.

Part 2 recommends the representation of the international system of units and prefixes for CANopen devices. CiA device and application profiles make use of this representation. It is highly recommended that device manufacturers make use of this way of presenting prefixes and SI units, for manufacturer-specific analog values as well.

Part 3 recommends blinking-patterns for light emitting diodes, mounted on the CANopen device, to indicate the status of the device. Such indicators may help service personnel to identify communication problems quickly without using a comprehensive diagnostic tool.
