Annual review and preview to the next year

It was a busy year. CiA started with the iCC in March its 25th anniversary. In more than 80 online and face-to-face meetings, CiA members developed and reviewed technical documents.

In September, the CANopen FD application layer and communication profile (CiA 1301) was released. The SIG (Special Interest Group) CANopen and the SIG programmable devices will continue to develop CANopen FD related specifications. This includes the CANopen FD test plan and the XML-based electronic data sheet for CiA 1301 compliant devices.

The IG (Interest Group) CAN FD initiated several Task Forces: Ringing suppression, common-mode choke, and cable. Related specifications and recommendations have not been finalized. This should happen in the next year.

CiA also organized several webinars. They were not that well participated. Next year, CiA continues to offer webinars, in order to inform interested parties, members and non-members about new developments in CAN technology. Additionally, CiA trainers conducted regular seminars and in-house seminars.

CiA presented CAN and CANopen technology at Embedded World (Nuremberg, Germany), Interlift (Augsburg, Germany), IAS (Shanghai, China), and SPS IPC Drives (Nuremberg, Germany). Next year, CiA exhibits additionally at Hanover Fair and Bauma in Shanghai. As in this year, CiA members have also next year the opportunity to present their CANopen products on the CiA booths. For details please contact headquarters(at)can-cia.org.

CiA also published four issues of the CAN Newsletter magazine to be downloadable as PDF file. Additionally, some 500 product-related news have been published in the CAN Newsletter Online. To inform interested parties about the content of the CiA publications, the CiA's Weekly Telegraph email has been sent to about 14500 subscribers.

The last event of CiA’s 25th anniversary will take place in January 2018. The CiA ’25 event will mainly inform about CANopen FD, the status and the expected future in different markets. For details and registration please read on here.

This year was busy. We had many new customers using CAN networks in deeply embedded applications. The main competitors are still EIA-232 and EIA-485 based communication links as well as discrete analog and digital I/O ports. Membership is still growing: CiA has now more than 600 members.

Next year seems to be busy, as well.

For this year, we close the CiA office from December 25 to January 2. When we are back to our desks, we will appreciate to serve our members and customers.

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

Your CiA team
