CANopen FD at the Embedded World 2018

The Embedded World trade show will take place in Nuremberg (February 27 to March 1). CiA will show its CANopen FD demonstrator.

As usual, CAN in Automation (CiA) exhibits on the Embedded World trade show (hall 1, stand 630). CiA will demonstrate a CANopen FD network with nodes developed by different companies. CANopen FD is specified in the CiA 1301 specification, which has been released last year in September. It introduces the USDO (Universal Service Data Object) services and protocols allowing to broadcast configuration data. Additionally, the PDO and EMCY protocols have been improved, in order to make use of the larger payload (up to 64 byte) provided by the CAN FD data link layer protocol.

“We expect to see this year more CAN FD hardware,” said Holger Zeltwanger, CiA Managing Director. “The Embedded World is the first opportunity to announce those products.” CAN FD capable micro-controllers are the base for CANopen FD implementations. CiA will provide first-hand information about device and system design for CANopen FD networks on its booth. “It is a good opportunity to discuss CANopen FD topics with CiA engineers,” said Reiner Zitzmann, CEO of CiA. “We inform visitors also about the next steps regarding the CANopen FD technology – for example, about functional safety, cyber-security, and conformance testing.” Of course, any other question about CAN technology is welcome, too.

In addition to the CANopen FD demonstrator, several CiA members present their CANopen products on the CiA booth. Interested parties may contact Ms. Weber (publications(at)

This year, CiA will exhibit at Hannover Messe (April 23 to 27), too. The CANopen FD demonstrator and the CANopen product panels provided by CiA members are exhibited. “CiA likes to introduce CANopen FD technology for the first time to broader range of international visitors,” said Reiner Zitzmann. “The SPS IPC Drives and Embedded World trade shows are more Germany-oriented events.”
